Des Moines, IA – Temperatures are set to surge into the 80s by Monday afternoon, putting parts of central Iowa within reach of record-breaking heat for late March.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, highs will climb to around 85°F in Des Moines, surpassing the standing record of 83°F set in 1968. Ottumwa is expected to reach 84°F, also threatening its 83°F record, while Mason City could edge past its 78°F record with a forecast high near 79°F. Waterloo may fall just short of its 84°F record, with highs near 81°F.
The unusual warmth will be felt statewide, impacting cities along I-35 and I-80, including Ames and Cedar Rapids, where residents can expect summer-like conditions during peak afternoon hours.
With dry air and increasing winds, the heat may also elevate fire risk across open fields and rural areas. Officials advise avoiding outdoor burning and staying hydrated if spending extended time outside.
Cooler air is expected to follow by Tuesday as a front moves through, ending the brief stretch of record-challenging warmth.
