Des Moines, IA – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday, as strong winds and blowing snow continue to create dangerous travel conditions across much of Iowa overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, wind gusts up to 40 mph are expected to cause whiteout conditions at times, especially in open and rural areas. Visibility may drop below a quarter mile, and roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to be slick and snow-covered.
The warning covers a wide area including Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, Carroll, Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, and Pella, extending across central, north-central, and western Iowa. Officials report blowing and drifting snow leading to difficult travel and possible rural road closures overnight.
Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. If driving is essential, the weather service recommends keeping emergency supplies in vehicles, allowing extra time, and maintaining a safe following distance. Sudden visibility drops and icy stretches are expected, particularly along Highways 20, 30, and I-35.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise Sunday, though cold and slick roads will persist into the morning hours as winds remain strong.
