DES MOINES, Iowa – A strong cold front will sweep across Iowa Tuesday night, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms along with a sharp drop in temperatures by Wednesday. Northern parts of the state may see the first storms as early as late Tuesday afternoon, with the boundary shifting south overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, highs Tuesday will range from 73 to 80 degrees, but the shift in air mass will cool much of Iowa into the mid-60s and 70s by Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected statewide Wednesday, with a few storms capable of producing gusty winds.

Travelers across I-35 and I-80 should prepare for reduced visibility and slick road conditions during peak travel times. Outdoor plans in Des Moines, Ames, and Cedar Rapids may be interrupted by repeated rounds of rain and lightning.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and avoid outdoor activity during thunder. Those in northern Iowa should be alert to the chance of stronger storms Wednesday morning.

Cooler and breezier conditions will settle in for the end of the week, offering a break from summer heat but keeping skies unsettled.
