Des Moines, Iowa – Wet roads and reduced visibility could impact drivers across central and eastern Iowa within hours as widespread rain moves in through the day and into the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, rain chances range from 50% to 80% across much of the state today, with the highest coverage expected from Des Moines east toward Cedar Rapids and Davenport. Northern and western Iowa will see lower chances, but scattered showers are still likely.
While widespread severe weather is not expected, an isolated stronger storm could develop late this afternoon. The bigger concern is steady rainfall leading to ponding on roadways, especially along Interstate 80, Interstate 35, and other major routes during peak travel hours.
Water levels on smaller rivers and streams may also rise within banks, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Drivers are urged to slow down on wet roads and avoid areas where water collects quickly.
Additional rounds of rain and storms are expected into early next week, with a more active pattern developing that could bring stronger storms and more widespread impacts.
