Des Moines, Iowa – Fires could spread rapidly across parts of Iowa today as gusty winds and dry air combine with near-record heat, creating dangerous conditions for any spark to grow out of control.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, southwest winds will gust between 20 and 25 mph through the afternoon while humidity drops as low as 25 to 40 percent. Temperatures are expected to climb between 79 and 86 degrees, especially across western and southern Iowa, where the fire risk is highest.

Communities including Council Bluffs, Creston, Ottumwa, and areas along I-35 and I-80 face an elevated fire of fast-moving grass or brush fires. Dry vegetation and dormant fuels make it easier for flames to ignite and spread quickly, particularly in open rural areas.

Officials strongly advise against any outdoor burning today. Even small fires or discarded cigarettes could ignite rapidly under these conditions. Residents should secure equipment that may produce sparks and remain alert for any signs of smoke.

The elevated fire threat will persist through the evening before winds gradually ease. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
