Des Moines, Iowa – Light snow is expected to move into central Iowa Thursday, bringing minor but timely travel concerns for the Des Moines metro as commuters head out on area roadways during the late morning and afternoon hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snow will begin across northern Iowa Thursday morning before spreading south and east through the day. Accumulations are expected to remain minimal, with most locations picking up less than an inch. While totals will be light, snowfall timing could still impact traffic during periods of steady movement.

Drivers along I-35, I-80, and I-235 should be prepared for slick spots, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated ramps as snow briefly coats road surfaces. Visibility reductions are expected to be minor, but conditions may change quickly during passing snow bands. Iowa DOT crews are expected to monitor conditions, though roads could become slushy during peak snowfall.

Surrounding communities including Ankeny, Urbandale, West Des Moines, and Altoona may also see brief snow-covered roads before temperatures help limit accumulation. Winds will remain light, reducing the risk of blowing snow.

Snow is expected to taper off by Thursday evening, with most impacts ending before the overnight commute. No major disruptions are anticipated, but drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra travel time. Additional updates may be issued if snowfall coverage expands farther south than expected.
