Iowa – Rain taps against windshields this morning across central Iowa, but the air is changing quickly. Gusty winds sweep across open fields while temperatures slide toward freezing. By afternoon, rain will flip to snow, and visibility may collapse in blowing snow around Des Moines.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Blizzard Warning begins at 1 p.m. for much of central and southern Iowa, including Polk, Dallas, Story, and Warren counties. Winds will ramp up to 30 to 40 mph with gusts between 55 and 65 mph. Snowfall totals between 2 and 5 inches may seem modest, but intense wind will loft snow across highways and reduce visibility below one-quarter mile at times.

Travel conditions could deteriorate quickly across Interstate 80, Interstate 35, and Interstate 235 by mid-afternoon. Wet pavement will freeze as colder air pushes in, raising the risk of flash freezing on bridges and overpasses. High-profile vehicles may struggle in crosswinds, especially across exposed stretches west of Des Moines and toward Ames.

Meteorologists are also tracking scattered thunderstorms this morning ahead of the cold surge. Lightning and bursts of heavier rain may briefly reduce visibility before snow arrives. Once colder air locks in tonight, blowing snow may linger into Monday morning, potentially slowing the commute across central Iowa.

Residents should secure outdoor objects, charge phones, and limit travel once winds intensify. If you must drive, keep a winter kit in the vehicle and monitor road conditions through the Iowa 511 system.

Conditions gradually calm Monday, but bitter air lingers and another light snow chance appears Tuesday night. After that, temperatures rebound quickly as spring warmth builds later in the week across Iowa.
