Iowa wakes to blurred headlights and ghostly taillights this morning as dense fog blankets central portions of the state. Visibility drops quickly on open roads, with moisture clinging to pavement and making early travel feel tense and uncertain.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning across much of central Iowa. Visibility may fall to a quarter mile or less, creating hazardous driving conditions on I-35, I-80, and rural highways where sudden slowdowns are likely.

Fog gradually thins late this morning, allowing partial sunshine to break through by afternoon. Temperatures remain mild for late December, climbing into the upper 40s. That brief calm sets the stage for a busier weather pattern as the first full weekend of winter unfolds.

Saturday stays mostly dry with patchy fog early, then clouds increase. Travel conditions improve for much of the day, making it one of the better windows for post-holiday trips. By Saturday night, winds shift and strengthen as colder air approaches.

Sunday brings a noticeable change. Gusty northwest winds may exceed 35 mph, pulling colder air into Iowa. Rain may mix with snow by afternoon, especially north and west of Des Moines. Even light snow could reduce visibility and create slick spots as temperatures slide toward freezing.

By Sunday night, blustery conditions dominate. Any leftover moisture may refreeze, raising concerns for black ice early Monday. Drivers should slow down and remain alert on bridges and untreated roads.

Looking ahead to New Year’s Eve on Wednesday, colder air remains in place across Iowa. While major storms are not signaled yet, winter conditions appear locked in as 2026 approaches, keeping travel plans weather-aware.
