Iowa — Streetlights glow against drifting flakes, and tires hiss softly on damp pavement as winter tightens its grip across central Iowa. Light snow is already slipping into the Des Moines area, and conditions are poised to change quickly as temperatures hover near freezing.

The National Weather Service reports light snow continuing through the morning, with snow accumulations up to around 1.5 inches possible, especially north of Des Moines. A brief freezing drizzle mix may develop early, increasing the risk for slick roads before precipitation tapers from west to east later today.

Road conditions could deteriorate fast on untreated streets, bridges, and ramps. Even minor snowfall will cling to cold pavement. Drivers should use caution along I-235, I-80, and neighborhood routes where slushy patches may refreeze.

Temperatures climb into the low to mid-30s today, which may help melt some snow. However, that relief is short-lived. Once the sun lowers, melted snow can refreeze, creating flash-freeze hazards into the evening hours.

By Monday, skies turn partly sunny with highs near 32 degrees. While travel improves, shaded areas may stay icy. Tuesday brings cooler air with highs closer to 29, keeping winter firmly in place. Midweek looks quieter, though clouds linger and temperatures remain seasonably cold.

Looking ahead to the first full week of February, meteorologists continue tracking subtle systems that could reintroduce snow chances across Iowa. With the Great Lakes nearly half frozen, cold air remains well supported across the Midwest, keeping winter weather threats active.

Plan extra time for travel today, slow down on slick roads, and watch for changing conditions by evening. Sidewalks and parking lots may look harmless but hide thin ice.
