Des Moines, Iowa – Scattered thunderstorms could bring lightning and brief downpours to Des Moines and much of central Iowa this evening, with isolated showers expected to continue overnight, mainly across the west and northwest.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the risk for storms this afternoon through tonight sits at about 20–25%, with the greatest chances in southern Iowa before storms shift northwest overnight. While a strong storm may develop in the northwest, the likelihood of severe weather remains low.

Residents in Des Moines, Ames, and Council Bluffs may see sporadic rain and hear thunder into the early morning. Motorists on I-35 and I-80 should stay alert for slick roads, especially after dark. Most communities can expect only brief disruptions, but it’s wise to keep mobile devices charged and avoid outdoor activities during any thunder.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, hot and humid conditions will dominate the state, with heat indices soaring past 100°F at times. Iowans should limit outdoor activity during the afternoon, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors as temperatures rise.

Additional storm chances are possible later this week. The National Weather Service will issue further updates if conditions change.
