Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers across Iowa may face dangerous travel conditions Sunday as strong winds whip existing snow into the air, sharply reducing visibility and raising the risk of sudden whiteouts, especially in the northern half of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the highest potential for whiteout conditions is expected in northern Iowa, where open rural roads could see visibility drop below a quarter mile at times. Central Iowa is not in the clear, with a 40 to 50 percent chance of blowing snow developing during the daytime hours Sunday as winds increase.

Communities from Mason City and Algona to Fort Dodge and Storm Lake appear most vulnerable to rapid visibility drops, while areas farther south, including Des Moines and Ames, could still see periods of blowing snow that make highways and county roads hazardous. Gusty winds may quickly cover previously plowed roads, catching drivers off guard.

State and local officials urge travelers to reconsider non-essential trips Sunday, particularly in open country where drifting snow can develop quickly. Motorists who must travel should carry a winter car kit, keep phones fully charged, and be prepared for sudden slowdowns or road closures.

Conditions will be closely monitored through Sunday, and additional advisories or travel alerts could be issued as winds strengthen and blowing snow becomes more widespread.
