Iowa – Damp pavement and a thick, humid feel are setting the stage for a stormy stretch across central Iowa, with conditions already shifting as clouds build over Des Moines this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, isolated showers and thunderstorms are developing today, with additional rounds expected through the week and increasing chances for heavier rainfall. While early activity remains scattered, the pattern is turning more active with each passing day.

Storm chances ramp up Tuesday, with periods of rain and thunderstorms becoming more widespread by evening. Some storms may bring brief downpours and gusty winds, especially along I-35 and I-80 corridors where travel could slow quickly during heavier bursts.

By Wednesday, coverage climbs even higher, with rain and storms likely across much of central Iowa. Rainfall may become more persistent, raising concerns for localized flooding in low-lying areas and near creeks. Water could begin pooling on roads, especially during peak travel times.

Temperatures stay warm, pushing into the mid-80s Tuesday before easing into the mid-70s Wednesday. That warmth fuels instability, helping storms redevelop repeatedly. Meteorologists are now tracking multiple rounds of rainfall, increasing the risk of flash flooding as the week progresses.

Thursday offers a brief break with sunshine and highs near 79°F, but the pattern remains active. Additional storm chances return by Friday and into the weekend, keeping conditions unsettled.

Five Day Forecast for Des Moines, Iowa

Wednesday: High 76°F, storms likely
Thursday: High 79°F, sunny
Friday: High 82°F, chance of storms
Saturday: High 54°F, partly sunny
