Des Moines, Iowa — Falling temperatures and freezing drizzle have created slick road conditions across parts of Iowa early Saturday, with black ice reported in several areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, both air and road temperatures dropped below freezing early this morning, allowing moisture on roadways to freeze and create hazardous driving conditions.

Transportation officials and forecasters say icy spots are most likely on bridges and overpasses, where surfaces cool faster than surrounding roads.

The National Weather Service noted that areas in northern and north-central Iowa have already reported ice-covered roads, particularly within a region highlighted by forecasters where freezing drizzle and mist have been occurring.

Black ice can be difficult to see and may appear as normal pavement, increasing the risk of sudden loss of traction for drivers.

Officials advise motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for slick spots, especially during the early morning hours.

Drivers are also encouraged to check current road conditions through the Iowa 511 system before traveling.

For commuters, students, and early-morning travelers across central and northern Iowa, bridges, rural highways, and elevated roadways may remain slippery until temperatures rise later in the day.
