Des Moines, Iowa – Scorching heat and humidity are gripping central Iowa this Friday, sending heat index values to a dangerous 105° and prompting a heat advisory for Des Moines, Ames, and dozens of surrounding counties until 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory spans much of central and southern Iowa, including Polk, Story, Dallas, Marshall, and Warren counties, as well as major cities and highways from Carroll to Ottumwa. The combination of air temperatures in the 90s and oppressive humidity creates a heightened risk for heat-related illness, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Travelers and outdoor workers should take urgent precautions: avoid strenuous activity, stay indoors in air conditioning whenever possible, and check on vulnerable relatives or neighbors. With heat at this level, symptoms like dizziness or confusion can come on fast, and area hospitals typically see a surge in calls. Those heading out for the Iowa State Fair or summer events should plan for extra hydration and frequent breaks in the shade.

Relief is on the way late tonight as chances for thunderstorms increase Saturday and Sunday, breaking the current heat wave. Additional weather alerts could be issued if storm threats develop. Stay tuned for updates, and limit outdoor exposure through this evening.
