Des Moines, IA – Strong winds are set to sweep across central Iowa on Thursday, bringing hazardous crosswinds, falling temperatures, and a chance for light snow showers that could create slick travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service Des Moines, winds will intensify Thursday morning, with widespread 40 to 50 mph gusts expected across much of the state. Peak gusts may occur between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., with the highest values concentrated along and east of I-35, where a Wind Advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.

Forecasters warn that dangerous crosswinds will be common on exposed roads, especially north–south routes such as I-35, Highway 65, and Highway 69. High-profile vehicles may experience difficult handling during the strongest wind period.

Temperatures will fall behind the cold front Thursday, and scattered light snow showers are expected during the afternoon. Although accumulations will be minimal, even brief bursts of snow could reduce visibility and create slippery spots—particularly on untreated roads and elevated surfaces.

Peak wind gusts shown on the forecast map indicate values of 51 mph in Ames, 50 mph in Indianola, 49 mph in Des Moines, 52 mph in Marshalltown, and 51 mph in Waterloo. Western Iowa—including Carroll and Atlantic—may see slightly lower but still impactful gusts in the 39–45 mph range.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor decorations, monitor changing conditions, and exercise caution on the roads. The Weather Service advises preparing for potential travel delays, especially during the afternoon commute.
