Des Moines, IA – Winds will turn breezy today across Iowa, with gusts reaching 20–30 mph and up to 35 mph in northwest Iowa, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines. The combination of stronger winds and lower humidity will bring isolated elevated fire weather conditions to parts of northwest Iowa through this afternoon.

Forecasters said clouds will increase later today as a system moves through the region. Scattered showers and a few non-severe thunderstorms are expected to develop late tonight and continue through early Friday morning. Rain chances taper off by mid-morning, with dry and mild weather expected into the weekend.

Daytime highs are forecast to reach the 70s, offering mostly sunny skies for much of the state before clouds build in after sunset. Overnight lows will dip into the 50s.

Residents, especially those in agricultural areas, are urged to use caution with any open flames or equipment that could spark fires during the windy and dry afternoon hours.
