DES MOINES, Iowa – Light to moderate snow is causing slick roads across south-central Iowa this evening, with conditions expected to worsen toward sunset and continue until 9 p.m. Monday. Commuters from Knoxville to Ottumwa should plan for slow travel, with 1 to 3 inches of accumulation and patchy ice possible as temperatures drop.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Marion, Mahaska, Lucas, Monroe, Wapello, Wayne, Appanoose, and Davis counties. Melting snow earlier in the day will refreeze quickly, creating black ice on bridges and untreated roads through tonight.
The Iowa Department of Transportation reports slick conditions along U.S. 34 and Iowa Highway 5, particularly near Chariton and Bloomfield. Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and avoid sudden stops as visibility drops in steady snow.
Even light accumulation could make for hazardous driving during the Monday evening commute. Residents are advised to delay nonessential travel and check the Iowa 511 app or 511ia.org for the latest road conditions.
Forecasters expect snow to taper off by mid-evening, but refreezing will leave icy spots into early Tuesday morning. Those walking outside should use caution on sidewalks, stairs, and parking lots.
