DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa’s first taste of winter may arrive this weekend as a rain-to-snow transition spreads across the state Saturday, bringing the risk of slick travel and early-season accumulations in northern areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, precipitation will begin late Friday night in northwest Iowa and spread southeast through Saturday. Northern counties from Sioux City to Mason City are most likely to see accumulating snow, while central zones—possibly as far south as Interstate 80—could see a brief mix of rain and wet snow. Minor temperature shifts will determine where that transition line settles.
The agency warns that even light snow could create hazardous travel, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses Saturday morning through evening. Iowa DOT advises drivers to reduce speed, allow extra braking distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during the heaviest precipitation. Power disruptions are not expected, but early freezes could impact weekend events and outdoor work.
Residents are urged to monitor local updates as forecast confidence improves. Overnight temperatures near freezing may allow patchy refreezing into Sunday morning, especially across elevated surfaces.
