Des Moines, Iowa – Thunderstorms are moving across southern Iowa today as a cold front sweeps through the state, bringing cooler air and unsettled conditions. Scattered showers are expected through the afternoon, with the chance of a stronger storm developing south of Interstate 80.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, storms will be most widespread in southern counties through late afternoon, with highs ranging from the low 60s in the north to mid-70s in the south. Forecasters warn that a few storms could produce heavy rain and gusty winds before conditions begin to ease.

By Thursday evening, another round of showers and isolated storms may pass through central and southern Iowa before the front fully clears. Drivers on I-35 and Highway 34 should be prepared for sudden downpours during the evening commute.

Friday and Saturday will bring relief with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 60s to low 70s. Cooler nights are also expected, a welcome change after recent humidity. Residents are advised to keep weather alerts active today and avoid travel during the strongest storms.

More updates are expected as additional showers may linger into Thursday night.
