DES MOINES, Iowa – Central Iowa begins Saturday under a blanket of thick fall fog, creating reduced visibility for early drivers across I-35, I-80, and major city routes. The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Special Weather Statement warning that visibility could drop below a half mile through early morning. Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and keep extra distance between vehicles during the commute.

According to the National Weather Service, fog will lift by midmorning, giving way to clouds and mild conditions before another round of scattered showers develops later today. Light rain may continue into early Sunday as a weak system passes across the region. Winds will increase through the day, gusting up to 25–30 mph by this evening. Those planning fall events or outdoor work should prepare for damp grounds and breezy conditions.

Sunday looks more pleasant, with bright sunshine returning by afternoon and highs near 64°F. By Monday, skies clear completely, setting up a stretch of calm, mild fall weather—perfect for pumpkin patch visits, park walks, and Halloween decorating.

According to meteorologists, another breeze builds Tuesday as a weak cold front brushes the state, briefly dropping temperatures midweek. Morning lows could dip into the upper 30s by Wednesday, hinting at Iowa’s first frost potential as the final days of October approach.
