DES MOINES, Iowa – Central Iowa wakes under a chill this morning as the first widespread frost of the season grips lawns, rooftops, and open fields. The sharp drop in temperature has painted a light shimmer across the landscape — and it’s only the start of a cold stretch that could deliver another round of frost by Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Frost Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. today for much of central and southern Iowa, including Polk, Dallas, Story, and Warren Counties. A second advisory has already been issued for late tonight into early Thursday, with temperatures again expected to dip to around 30°F in rural lowlands. Light winds and clear skies will create ideal conditions for frost formation both mornings.

Residents are urged to cover or bring in tender plants, drain hoses, and protect outdoor faucets. Farmers and gardeners should take note — this event could effectively end the growing season for unprotected crops. Commuters along I-80 and U.S. 30 should also allow extra time early, as patchy frost may coat windshields and bridge decks before sunrise.

The chill will ease slightly by Friday, when highs reach the low 60s under full sunshine. The weekend turns milder but remains dry — perfect for outdoor work, early Halloween decorating, or fall football tailgates. To be fair, no snow is in sight yet, but the crisp pattern signals Iowa’s shift toward its winter rhythm. Many across the Midwest are now watching closely for that first flake — and this week’s frost feels like the prelude.
