Des Moines, Iowa – A light rain and snow mix is expected to move into central Iowa late Wednesday night, potentially creating slick spots along Interstate 35 and Interstate 80 by Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a band of light rain and snow will drift from northwestern Iowa toward central and north central portions of the state overnight. The precipitation is expected to persist into Thursday morning before tapering off.
Forecasters say snowfall accumulations will be minimal, with little to no measurable buildup expected on most surfaces. However, brief periods of mixed precipitation could create isolated slick areas, especially on untreated bridges, overpasses and elevated roadways including I-235 and U.S. Highway 69.
The greatest potential for slick conditions will occur early Thursday morning as temperatures hover near freezing. North central Iowa may see the highest likelihood of minor impacts.
No significant winter storm accumulation is forecast, and widespread travel disruptions are not expected. Still, drivers should allow extra stopping distance during the Thursday morning commute.
Students waiting at bus stops and early commuters may notice colder conditions and light precipitation before sunrise.
Conditions are expected to improve later Thursday morning as precipitation ends and road surfaces warm.
The National Weather Service advises motorists to monitor updated forecasts in case minor changes in temperature affect road conditions overnight.
