Des Moines, Iowa — Central and western Iowa will experience a mix of minor winter weather impacts today before a noticeable warmup and breezy conditions arrive late in the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, freezing drizzle and light flurries are possible early Wednesday morning, mainly across western Iowa. While accumulations are not expected, the light freezing drizzle could briefly create slick spots on untreated roads, particularly during the morning commute.

Cloudy conditions will persist through much of the day, with high temperatures ranging from 25 to 36 degrees. Travel impacts should remain limited, but motorists along corridors such as Interstate 80, Interstate 35, U.S. Highway 30, and Interstate 235 are encouraged to remain alert for isolated slick patches, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Thursday will bring a cloudy but warmer start, with highs climbing into the mid-30s to upper 40s, especially across southern and western Iowa. Overnight lows into Friday morning are expected to range from 28 to 34 degrees, reducing the risk of freezing precipitation.

By Friday, a stronger warmup is expected as temperatures rise into the mid-30s to upper 40s. However, the warmer weather will be accompanied by breezy north winds, sustained at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph possible by Friday evening. These winds may impact high-profile vehicles on exposed roadways such as I-80, I-35, and rural east-west highways.

While no significant winter weather is expected later this week, the combination of gusty winds and cooler air behind the system could make conditions feel colder Friday evening.

For commuters, students, and outdoor workers, the greatest concern will be the brief freezing drizzle potential early today and the strong winds Friday, particularly during evening travel.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from weather.gov/dmx as conditions evolve through the week.
