Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers and residents across Iowa face a double threat over the next 24 hours as 45 mph wind gusts and critically low humidity elevate wildfire danger Friday, followed by accumulating snow in northern counties by early Saturday. Travel and outdoor plans could shift quickly, especially along major interstates.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, Red Flag Warnings are in effect Friday for parts of southern and northwestern Iowa, where dry vegetation and humidity levels near 20 percent will combine with strong southwest winds. Gusts between 35 and 45 mph are expected along Interstate 35, Interstate 80 and Interstate 29 through early evening. Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning, as fires could spread rapidly in open fields.

High temperatures will surge into the 60s and near 70 degrees in southern Iowa Friday afternoon, including areas near Council Bluffs and Ottumwa. The warm, dry air will create volatile conditions for farm fields and grassy areas west of I-35. Emergency managers urge residents to secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass and report smoke immediately.

By early Saturday, a band of snow is expected to develop across northern Iowa, including Mason City and areas near US-20 and I-35. Light accumulations may create slick spots during the morning hours, especially on bridges and untreated secondary roads.

Conditions will stabilize later Saturday as winds ease, but fire danger remains high until humidity recovers. Additional advisories are possible if winds exceed projections or snowfall rates increase overnight.
