Des Moines, Iowa – Gusty winds are expected to move across Iowa late tonight into Friday morning, creating travel concerns in parts of the state, particularly across northern Iowa.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a boundary moving across the region overnight will bring increasing winds, with gusts potentially reaching 40 miles per hour, especially north of Interstate 80. The strongest winds are expected from late tonight through Friday morning before gradually easing later in the day.
While no precipitation-related hazards are expected, strong winds alone may impact travel, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as semi-trucks, buses, and vehicles towing trailers. Drivers may experience sudden crosswinds on open stretches of roadway.
Major travel corridors that could be affected include Interstate 35 from Des Moines to Mason City, Interstate 80 across central Iowa, U.S. Highway 20 in northern Iowa, and Interstate 380 near Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. Wind-prone areas in open farmland may see the strongest gusts.
High temperatures on Friday are expected to range from the 30s across northern Iowa to the 40s in central and southern parts of the state, limiting any additional winter-related hazards. Skies are expected to remain mostly dry as the boundary passes.
Looking ahead, the National Weather Service indicates a warming trend beginning Sunday, with temperatures continuing to rise into early next week. By Monday, highs in the upper 40s to low 60s are expected across much of Iowa, with the warmest conditions likely in central and southwestern areas.
Near-record warmth is possible in some locations Monday, offering a sharp contrast to recent winter conditions. While the upcoming warmth will improve travel conditions, residents are encouraged to remain aware of changing weather patterns typical for February.
Motorists traveling late tonight or early Friday should remain alert for strong wind gusts, keep both hands on the wheel, and allow extra space when passing or being passed by larger vehicles.
