Des Moines, Iowa – Strong winds and warm temperatures are creating elevated fire danger across Iowa today.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, elevated fire weather conditions have expanded statewide Tuesday. Afternoon highs are forecast in the mid-50s to low 70s, with the coolest readings in northeast Iowa and the warmest temperatures southwest.

South to southwest winds between 20 and 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph. Dry conditions combined with those winds will make it easier for fires to spread rapidly.

The National Weather Service advises that burning is not recommended. Officials warn that if a brush pile or field fire ignites, flames could spread quickly and become uncontrollable. Residents are encouraged to delay any outdoor burning until conditions improve.

Drivers along Interstate 80 through Des Moines, Interstate 35 from Ames to Mason City, and Interstate 29 in western Iowa may experience strong crosswinds, especially in open rural areas. Lightweight outdoor objects should be secured.

While no widespread power outages are forecast, gusty winds could down small tree branches.

Students, farmers, and outdoor workers should use caution with equipment that could spark a fire, particularly in grassy or agricultural areas.

Conditions are expected to remain breezy through the afternoon before gradually easing later in the day.
