Des Moines, Iowa – Breezy conditions combined with snow showers and a brief risk of freezing drizzle may create hazardous travel across central Iowa today before a gradual warm-up arrives later this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snow showers will move through the region this morning into early afternoon. While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light overall, forecasters say localized accumulations up to 2 inches are possible, especially across north-central and northeastern Iowa.

In addition to snow, there is a potential for freezing drizzle to mix in, which could lead to slick road surfaces despite relatively modest snowfall totals. Gusty winds will further reduce visibility at times, particularly in open areas.

Travel impacts are most likely along major corridors including Interstate 35, Interstate 80, Interstate 235, and U.S. Highway 30. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads may become slippery quickly during heavier snow showers or periods of drizzle. Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra stopping distance.

Temperatures today are expected to range from the mid-20s to upper 30s, remaining cold enough to support icy conditions. Once the snow exits the area this afternoon, clouds will gradually decrease, setting the stage for clearer skies tonight.

Looking ahead, Monday is expected to start mostly clear, especially across eastern Iowa, before clouds return later in the day. Highs Monday will range from the upper teens to upper 30s, depending on location.

Cloud cover will be more persistent Tuesday and Wednesday, though temperatures will trend near or slightly above normal. A more noticeable warm-up is expected during the latter half of the week, offering a break from recent winter conditions.

Today’s wintry mix may affect commuters, students, and delivery drivers across central Iowa, particularly during the morning and midday travel periods.
