Des Moines, Iowa – Snow chances return to Iowa late Saturday night and continue through Sunday morning, with light accumulations and a potential mix of freezing drizzle creating slick travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines reports that light snow will develop after midnight, becoming most widespread across northern Iowa during the early morning hours Sunday. Snow is expected to gradually taper off by Sunday afternoon, with most locations receiving up to 1 inch of accumulation. Isolated areas in northern Iowa could see locally higher totals near 1.5 inches.

Forecasters warn that patchy freezing drizzle may mix with the snow Sunday morning, especially during the transition period, which could lead to slick and icy road conditions despite relatively light snowfall amounts. A light dusting of snow is also possible across southern Iowa.

Travel impacts are expected to be most noticeable during the Sunday morning hours, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Drivers should use caution along major corridors including Interstate 35, Interstate 80, Interstate 380, US-20, and US-30, where brief icy patches may develop.

In addition to snow and ice, breezy conditions are expected to accompany the system. Winds will increase from the south and southwest at 15 to 25 mph, shifting to the northwest late Sunday, which may cause areas of blowing snow in open, rural locations.

While widespread disruptions are not anticipated, the combination of light snow, freezing drizzle, and wind could make travel slower and less predictable Sunday morning. Motorists are urged to reduce speeds, allow extra stopping distance, and stay informed of changing conditions.

These conditions may be especially impactful for early-morning commuters, weekend travelers, and those driving rural highways across northern Iowa.
