Des Moines, Iowa – Mostly cloudy skies and cool temperatures will persist across Iowa today, with a brief period of light wintry precipitation possible in parts of the state late this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a light wintry mix may develop over far southwest Iowa later today. This could include a brief icy glaze in localized areas. Elsewhere, very light snow is possible, mainly west of Interstate 35, though impacts are expected to remain minimal.

Daytime temperatures today are forecast to range from the upper teens in northern Iowa to near 30 degrees in the south. Overnight lows tonight are expected to fall into the teens and lower 20s, with the coolest readings again across northern and western portions of the state.

The National Weather Service notes that precipitation chances will remain low and short-lived, with no significant accumulation anticipated. However, even a light glaze could create slick spots on untreated roads, particularly in far southwest Iowa during the late afternoon and evening hours.

Looking ahead, dry weather is forecast for the weekend statewide. A warming trend will begin Saturday, with highs climbing into the 20s and 30s, then rising further into the 30s and 40s by Sunday.

The timing of today’s light wintry mix may be most noticeable for late-day commuters, especially in areas west of Interstate 35, before quieter and milder conditions settle in for the weekend.
