Des Moines, Iowa — South winds strengthened across central Iowa Friday morning and are expected to increase through the afternoon and evening, with gusts reaching 20 to 30 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said winds will be noticeably lighter than Thursday’s powerful system but still strong enough to impact travel, outdoor activities and loose objects. Sustained winds of 10 to 20 mph are expected through Friday afternoon, with higher gusts developing as the pressure gradient tightens across the region.

The strongest gusts are forecast across northern and western Iowa, where wind speeds may briefly peak near 30 mph. Areas including Estherville, Algona, Storm Lake and Sheldon could see the highest sustained winds, while central Iowa cities such as Des Moines, Ames and Grinnell are expected to see gusts generally between 20 and 25 mph.

Winds are expected to increase from the south during the day as warmer air moves into the region ahead of the next weather system. While conditions will remain dry, the gusty winds may create challenges for high-profile vehicles, especially on north-south oriented highways.

Meteorologists emphasized that Friday’s winds will not approach the intensity of Thursday’s damaging gusts, but residents should still take precautions. Lightweight outdoor items such as trash bins, holiday decorations and patio furniture should be secured to prevent them from being blown around.

Despite the breezy conditions, temperatures are expected to remain seasonable for mid-December, with no precipitation forecast through the evening hours. Winds are expected to gradually ease overnight but may remain breezy into early Saturday.
