Des Moines, IA – A winter storm is taking aim at Iowa this weekend, with forecasters warning of several inches of snow and potential travel disruptions across the northern half of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, widespread snowfall of 2 to 5 inches is expected across central and northern Iowa, with a heavier band potentially delivering up to 8 inches in some areas. The highest totals are forecast near Algona, Fort Dodge, and Mason City, where moderate to heavy snow could persist through Saturday night.
Forecasters noted that the exact placement of the heaviest snow band may still shift, but most of north-central Iowa should prepare for accumulating snow and reduced visibility. Roads are likely to become slick, especially on untreated surfaces, and motorists are urged to plan for slow travel and possible delays.
The snow will taper from west to east late Sunday, with lighter accumulations extending toward Des Moines, Waterloo, and Dubuque. South of Interstate 80, totals are expected to remain under 3 inches.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and exercise caution during travel, particularly in rural and open areas where blowing snow may further reduce visibility.
