Des Moines, Iowa – Light snow is expected to develop across southern Iowa today and continue into Sunday morning, with even small accumulations likely to cause slick travel conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snow will begin spreading into southwestern Iowa this morning before expanding eastward through the afternoon and evening. The snow is expected to diminish gradually by Sunday morning.
Forecasters say snowfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected across far southern Iowa, particularly near the Iowa–Missouri border. Farther north, including the Des Moines metro and areas along the Interstate 80 corridor, trace to dusting-level accumulations are anticipated.
While totals remain relatively low, the National Weather Service cautions that even a light dusting can create hazardous driving conditions, especially with cold pavement temperatures. Roads, bridges, and overpasses may quickly become slick, particularly during periods of light but steady snowfall.
Travel impacts are expected to be most noticeable this afternoon and evening as snow spreads east and traffic volumes increase. Visibility reductions may also occur during brief heavier snow showers, further complicating driving conditions.
Drivers are urged to reduce speeds, increase following distances, and allow extra travel time if heading out today or tonight. Officials note that untreated secondary roads and elevated surfaces are most susceptible to becoming icy.
The timing of the snowfall may affect weekend travel plans, especially for commuters and workers traveling later today or early Sunday morning. Young workers and students traveling during early hours may encounter slick spots before road crews are able to fully treat surfaces.
While no major winter storm is expected, below-freezing temperatures will allow snow and ice to linger into Sunday morning before conditions gradually improve.
The National Weather Service advises residents to stay alert to changing road conditions and continue monitoring local updates as light snow moves across southern Iowa.
