Des Moines, Iowa –Hot, humid weather and isolated storms are expected to impact Iowans through midweek, with heat indices soaring past 100 degrees in many areas on Tuesday and Wednesday. Travelers and residents in the southern and northwestern parts of the state should remain alert for scattered showers and storms this afternoon into tonight, with potential for strong thunderstorms overnight.
According to the US National Weather Service in Des Moines, showers and isolated storms could pop up this afternoon and evening, especially in southern Iowa, before shifting north and west overnight into Tuesday. While the threat for widespread severe storms remains low, a strong storm is possible in northwest Iowa late tonight and into Tuesday morning.
Communities along major routes like I-35 and I-80 could see brief downpours, gusty winds, and lightning, especially in cities such as Des Moines, Ames, and Fort Dodge. Meanwhile, heat and humidity will build statewide, with “feels-like” temperatures climbing above 100°—posing risks for heat illness if precautions aren’t taken.
Stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and check on neighbors and pets as conditions intensify. If storms impact your area, the extent of dangerous heat could be briefly reduced, but hot weather will quickly return. Additional weather alerts may be issued as conditions develop into Wednesday.
