Des Moines Braces for Severe Storms: High Winds and Tornado Risk Ahead

Des Moines, IA – Severe weather is set to impact Des Moines this week, with strong to severe storms expected Monday and Tuesday. Residents should prepare for damaging winds, large hail, and potential tornadoes.

According to the US National Weather Service in Des Moines, a line of storms moving out of Nebraska and South Dakota will hit the area tonight. While the most intense storms are forecasted to remain west, some storms in Des Moines could still produce significant damage.

Tuesday presents a higher risk for severe storms. The entire area is under a Slight to Enhanced risk, meaning all modes of severe weather are possible, including damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. The storms are expected to intensify in the afternoon and persist into the evening.

The detailed forecast for Des Moines shows a high of 73°F and cloudy conditions today, with showers likely in the evening. Tuesday will see an 80% chance of storms with a high of 83°F. Wednesday will bring cooler temperatures and partly cloudy skies, with highs in the mid-60s. Rain is likely again on Thursday with temperatures in the mid-60s. The rest of the week will see a mix of sun and clouds, with highs in the low 60s on Friday, mid-60s on Saturday, and a return to rain on Sunday. Monday will see clearing skies with a high of 80°F.
