Des Moines, Iowa – Iowans face a one-two weather punch Wednesday as oppressive heat will give way to scattered severe storms after 8 p.m., threatening damaging winds and power outages across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Heat Advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. as heat indices soar to 105°F in cities like Ames, Mason City, and Des Moines. Residents are urged to take breaks in air conditioning, drink plenty of water, and avoid leaving kids or pets in cars as heat illness remains a serious risk.

After sunset, a line of thunderstorms is forecast to enter northwestern and northern Iowa, moving southeast overnight. The most severe storms are likely from Spencer and Fort Dodge through Mason City, with wind gusts up to 70 mph possible. Power lines, trees, and unsecured outdoor items could be at risk, and scattered outages or minor damage may occur. Roads like I-35 and U.S. 20 may see rapid weather changes, and heavy rain could briefly reduce visibility.

If you have outdoor plans tonight, stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Charge electronic devices and consider moving to an indoor shelter before 8 p.m. This is Iowa’s most significant severe threat since early June.

Storm threats linger into Thursday morning, and more advisories may follow. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service.
