Des Moines, IA – Frigid temperatures continue in central Iowa, but relief is on the way as a warming trend arrives this weekend. Before that, wind chills as low as -25°F will grip the region overnight into Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Friday, warning of dangerously low temperatures across northern, central, and eastern Iowa. Frostbite can occur in under 30 minutes if skin is exposed, so residents are urged to bundle up and limit outdoor time.
Friday will stay cold with a high near 18°F, but temperatures will climb into the 30s on Saturday and low 40s by Sunday. Sunny skies will dominate through the weekend, making for a welcome change from this week’s bitter chill.
Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday could see highs near 50°F, marking a significant warm-up. This will help melt lingering ice and snow, improving road conditions. However, refreezing overnight could create slick spots, so drivers should remain cautious, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Stay warm tonight, and prepare for a much milder weekend ahead.
