Des Moines, Iowa – Triple-digit heat returns to Iowa this weekend, bringing oppressive humidity and dangerous heat indices to much of the state, especially in southern counties. Indices could reach or exceed 105° Friday and Saturday, making prolonged outdoor activity hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Heat Advisory is in effect Friday for central and southern Iowa, including Des Moines, Ottumwa, and Marshalltown. While northern Iowa may see slightly lower heat values, storm chances Friday and Saturday add uncertainty to just how hot it will get there.

Cities like Ames, Creston, and Ottumwa are expected to see heat indices well over 100°, with Des Moines likely hitting 105° both days. The NWS urges residents to limit outdoor work during peak afternoon hours, take breaks in air conditioning or shade, and drink plenty of water.

This intense heat comes with heightened risks for heat-related illnesses, particularly for children, the elderly, and outdoor workers. Officials warn never to leave pets or people in parked vehicles, even briefly.

The heat threat should ease slightly by early next week, though humidity will remain high and more weather advisories are possible.

Five Day Forecast for Des Moines, Iowa:

  • Friday: High 101°, heat index 105°, partly sunny, isolated storms possible late
  • Saturday: High 102°, heat index 105°, humid, scattered afternoon storms
  • Sunday: High 88°, lower humidity, mostly sunny
  • Monday: High 89°, sunny and warm
  • Tuesday: High 90°, partly cloudy, slight chance of showers
