Des Moines, IA – Intermittent showers and a few isolated thunderstorms are expected across Iowa today, with the highest rainfall chances in the southern and central parts of the state.

According to the US National Weather Service Des Moines, rainfall probabilities range from 40 to 60 percent in central and southern Iowa, while northern Iowa will see lower chances of rain, with less than 30 percent expected. Storm activity is most likely during the afternoon hours.

Forecasters noted that while a few thunderstorms may develop, severe weather is unlikely. The system is expected to bring passing showers throughout the day, which may cause brief travel delays or wet road conditions for weekend commuters.

Residents across the Des Moines metro and surrounding counties should plan for off-and-on rain through Saturday, but no widespread hazards are anticipated.

The National Weather Service will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve through the evening.
