Des Moines, IA – A large portion of Iowa is waking up to dangerous travel conditions this morning as dense fog blankets much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday for most of central and southern Iowa, including major population centers such as Des Moines, Ames, Indianola, Ottumwa, Boone, and Creston.

Visibility has dropped to a quarter-mile or less in many areas, making it difficult for drivers to see the road ahead. Officials warn that the fog could cause hazardous travel during the morning commute across highways and rural roads alike.

The advisory spans more than 20 counties, including Polk, Dallas, Marion, Warren, Mahaska, Story, and Wapello, among others. Motorists across this wide region are urged to use headlights, reduce speed, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Sudden braking should be avoided to reduce the risk of collisions.

Conditions are expected to improve later this morning as the fog gradually lifts with daylight. Until then, drivers should plan for extra travel time and remain alert.
