Denver, Colorado – Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt across northeastern Colorado this afternoon and evening, bringing a risk of damaging winds and hail to parts of the eastern plains.

According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, the strongest storms are likely east of a Sterling-to-Akron line, where gusts could reach up to 70 mph. Hail up to 1 inch in diameter is also possible, with isolated lightning strikes adding to the hazard.

While metro Denver will likely remain west of the worst conditions, gusty winds and brief downpours can’t be ruled out by early evening. Counties including Logan, Washington, Yuma, and Kit Carson are under an elevated threat, especially between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Residents in these areas should secure loose items, charge devices, and monitor warnings in case shelter is needed quickly.

The main risk will shift eastward after sunset, though lingering showers may persist. Further alerts may be issued if storm intensity increases or moves farther west than expected.
