Denver, Colo. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to fire across eastern Colorado late Tuesday afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for large hail and damaging winds. The highest threat zone runs from Sterling south to Limon, where isolated severe cells could quickly develop.
According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, storms will be most intense on the eastern plains, producing sudden gusts near 60 mph, hail up to quarter size, and heavy bursts of rain. Farther west, including along the I-25 Corridor and into the mountains, scattered showers and storms will still form but will mainly produce strong winds to 45 mph, lightning, and light rain.
Residents from Fort Morgan to Burlington should prepare for rapidly changing conditions on the roads this evening. Drivers are urged to use caution in areas of heavy rain and avoid pulling over under overpasses during hail. Power outages are possible in storm-hit regions.
Storm chances are expected to diminish after midnight, but forecasters caution that additional rounds of thunderstorms could develop midweek.
