Denver, CO – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Colorado mountains, where heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions are expected through Saturday night.

According to the National Weather Service Denver/Boulder office, snow began early Friday and will intensify tonight, with the heaviest snowfall expected through Saturday. Areas along the Park Range, Gore Range, and I-70 corridor could see 8–15 inches, while locations near Rabbit Ears Pass and northward may receive up to two feet of snow.

Winds gusting up to 55 mph will create blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility and making travel extremely hazardous across high mountain passes. Forecasters warn of “very difficult and dangerous” conditions through at least late Saturday night.

Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary mountain travel and to check road conditions before departing. Those venturing into the mountains should carry emergency supplies and expect delays or closures on routes including I-70, US-40, and CO-9.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve by Sunday morning as the storm weakens and snow tapers off.
