Denver, Colorado – Colorado’s first real summer weekend could turn stormy on Sunday, as severe thunderstorms target the northeast plains with large hail and gusty winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, a strong storm system will develop Sunday afternoon, mainly along and east of I-76 from Sterling to Akron. These storms could become severe, with the greatest threats being damaging hail and strong wind gusts up to 60 mph. Spotters are not being officially activated, but NWS encourages reports of hail or wind.
In Denver and along the Front Range, Sunday will bring rising storm chances by late afternoon. While early Sunday may be partly sunny, scattered thunderstorms could arrive by the evening. Winds will be variable through the day, and gusts may exceed 15–20 mph during storms.
Memorial Day (Monday) looks cooler with increased rain chances—especially during the afternoon and evening. Highs will top out in the upper 60s across Denver and the I-25 corridor, with off-and-on showers and a 60% storm chance. Breezy winds will develop in the afternoon.
Here’s a five-day look ahead:
- Tuesday: Mostly sunny early with isolated PM storms. High near 74°F.
- Tuesday Night: Showers likely after midnight.
- Wednesday: Slightly cooler, chance of storms continues. High near 71°F.
- Thursday: Warmer with another round of scattered thunderstorms.
- Friday: Sunshine early, then a chance of showers and storms late.
Keep a close eye on the radar and avoid travel during any warnings, especially east of Denver on Sunday. Another update will be issued if new alerts are posted.
