Denver, Colo. – A gradual warming trend is set to bring triple-digit heat to Colorado’s eastern plains by Thursday, while afternoon thunderstorms target the state’s high country. The National Weather Service in Boulder reports that most areas will stay dry early this week, but storm coverage will expand in the mountains by mid- to late-week.

According to the NWS, Tuesday will see highs from the upper 70s to near 90 degrees along the urban corridor, with mountain temperatures topping out in the low 80s. Isolated late-day showers and rumbles of thunder are possible over the mountains both Tuesday and Wednesday, with a more active storm pattern developing Thursday.

Plains residents should prepare for soaring highs Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and peaking at or just above 100 degrees in spots. Those outdoors should hydrate frequently, avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon heat, and watch for signs of heat illness. Mountain travelers should monitor for sudden storms, which can bring lightning and localized downpours.

The NWS says the heat wave and mountain storms may persist into late week, with updates expected by Wednesday morning.
