DENVER, Colo. – A sharp cool-down late this week will bring the season’s first widespread mix of rain and snow to Colorado’s high country, while rain chances extend onto the plains by Thursday. The National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder said colder air arriving midweek will trigger scattered mountain snow showers and a drop in temperatures of nearly 15–20 degrees from Wednesday’s highs.

According to the weather service, Tuesday and Wednesday will stay mostly sunny and warmer, with highs reaching the upper 70s to low 80s on the plains. By early Thursday, a cold front sweeping across the Rockies will pull moisture upslope, changing rain to snow above 8,000 feet. Light accumulations are likely on passes including Berthoud and Rabbit Ears, with slick conditions possible for morning travelers. Rain showers could reach Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins by midday before tapering off late.

Travelers are urged to check CDOT road updates before crossing the high terrain, as snow and slush could briefly impact mountain highways. Residents should plan for a sharp temperature drop, dress in layers, and protect sensitive outdoor plants and pets from the early chill.

Friday will turn drier and mostly sunny again, with highs recovering into the 60s across the metro.
