Denver and much of northeast Colorado are facing several days of elevated to critical fire weather conditions, prompting Red Flag Warnings today and a Fire Weather Watch for Friday. According to the National Weather Service in Denver and Boulder, strong winds combined with extremely dry air and unseasonably warm temperatures are creating an environment where fires can ignite easily and spread rapidly.

Today’s primary concern is focused on the northeast plains, where wind gusts between 45 and 65 miles per hour are expected. These strong winds, paired with very low humidity, significantly increase the risk of fast-moving grass and brush fires. Any spark from outdoor activities, equipment use, or unsecured flames could quickly become uncontrollable under these conditions. Fire officials urge residents to avoid activities that could produce sparks or flames, including burning debris or using outdoor fire pits.

Fire weather concerns will continue into Friday as another downslope wind event develops. Forecast models indicate very warm and dry air returning to the region, with record high temperatures likely across the Denver metro area. Highs may climb into the low 70s, which is exceptionally warm for December. This warmth, combined with low humidity and gusty winds, will maintain a heightened fire risk across the plains, foothills, and urban corridor.

Vegetation across much of Colorado remains dry, providing ample fuel for fire growth. Even areas that have seen recent cooler weather are vulnerable due to the rapid drying effect of downslope winds. Residents are encouraged to secure trailer chains, properly dispose of cigarettes, and postpone outdoor activities that could spark a fire.

While a pattern change may arrive later next week, fire weather conditions remain dangerous in the short term. Staying informed through local forecasts and adhering to fire restrictions will be critical in reducing wildfire risk across Denver and northeast Colorado over the next several days.
