Denver, Colorado – Dangerous travel and fire weather conditions are expected across the Denver metro and eastern plains today as high winds intensify.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. Friday, with widespread gusts of 55 to 65 mph and peak gusts reaching 70 mph in some areas. The strongest winds are expected from mid-morning through much of the afternoon.

The winds, combined with extremely dry conditions, are creating critical fire weather concerns, especially across open and agricultural areas east and northeast of Denver. Forecasters warn that any new fire could spread rapidly under these conditions.

Travel impacts are also a concern, with the potential for blowing dust, reduced visibility, and sudden crosswinds. The National Weather Service noted the possibility of localized dust storms or “brownouts”, which could make driving hazardous on exposed roadways and highways.

While winds are expected to ease slightly overnight, gusts of 30 to 45 mph may persist into early Saturday, prolonging travel and fire-related risks.

The warning area includes much of the I-25 corridor, portions of I-70 east of Denver, and surrounding plains communities. Drivers of high-profile vehicles, including trucks and RVs, are urged to use caution or delay travel if possible.

The situation is especially relevant for commuters, outdoor workers, and residents in fire-prone areas, as conditions may change rapidly throughout the day.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, avoid activities that could spark fires, and continue monitoring official updates from the National Weather Service.
