Colorado – Cold air settles into the Front Range this morning, sharp enough to sting exposed skin as sunlight climbs over the plains. It’s a quiet start, but winter conditions are lining up quickly, with snow chances and much colder temperatures arriving as the weekend approaches.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, an Arctic air mass drops into northeast and north-central Colorado Friday into Saturday. Light snow develops Friday and becomes more likely Friday night into Saturday, with the greatest impacts coming from falling temperatures rather than heavy accumulation. Highs tumble into the low 20s Friday, then drop to around 12 degrees Saturday.
Snow amounts remain light for most of the Denver metro, generally less than an inch. Even so, slick travel is possible as snow coincides with falling temperatures. Roads that briefly melt during daylight hours may refreeze quickly after sunset, increasing the risk of icy patches.
Drivers along I-25, I-70, and major surface roads should plan for changing conditions Friday night into Saturday morning. Visibility may dip briefly during snow showers, and untreated roads could become snow-packed early Saturday. Winds stay modest, but the cold will be noticeable, especially during early morning travel.
Saturday remains cold, with snow lingering at times before tapering. Overnight lows fall into the single digits in many areas. Sunday brings improvement, with sunshine returning and highs rebounding into the low 20s. A stronger warm-up follows early next week, pushing temperatures back toward seasonal levels by Monday and Tuesday.
Residents should dress for extreme cold, limit time outdoors, and protect pets and pipes. Allow extra travel time and use caution on bridges and shaded roads. Are roads slick in your area yet? Share what you’re seeing across the Denver metro.
