Denver, Colorado – Up to 6 inches of mountain snow may slow travel along I-70 through Thursday morning.
According to the US National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, snow will continue in the mountains this morning before gradually decreasing by afternoon. Additional snowfall totals are expected to range from 3 to 6 inches in the Park Range, with 2 to 5 inches mainly along and north of the I-70 mountain corridor.
Impacts are expected to be most noticeable during the Thursday morning commute, particularly across higher elevations and mountain passes. Slick and snow-covered roadways are likely along I-70 west of Denver through Evergreen, Idaho Springs, Silverthorne and Vail Pass.
Portions of US-40 in the Park Range and US-36 between Denver and Boulder could also see accumulating snow, especially during heavier bursts early in the day. Lower elevations across the Denver metro area are expected to see less accumulation, with road impacts mainly confined to the foothills and mountains.
Forecasters say snow intensity will diminish this afternoon, improving travel conditions later in the day. However, temperatures will remain cold enough in higher terrain to maintain icy stretches on untreated surfaces.
Drivers commuting through mountain corridors, including workers traveling from Summit and Clear Creek counties into the Denver area, should allow extra travel time and be prepared for changing road conditions.
