Denver, CO – A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Front Range mountains and northern foothills of Colorado through Thursday morning, with wind gusts up to 80 mph expected, according to the National Weather Service Denver/Boulder.
Forecasters say northwest winds of 35 to 50 mph, with locally stronger gusts near the foothills, will redevelop by midday Wednesday and persist overnight. Areas from Boulder and Fort Collins south toward Denver and Castle Rock are most at risk for damaging gusts and travel impacts.
“These will be very strong, potentially damaging winds,” meteorologists said in the morning update. “Travel will be hazardous for high-profile vehicles, and isolated power outages are possible.”
In addition to wind hazards, blowing snow could create visibility issues at higher elevations, particularly near Berthoud Pass and Estes Park. The strongest gusts are forecast late Wednesday evening into early Thursday before gradually diminishing by mid-morning.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid mountain travel if possible, and prepare for possible downed tree limbs or power interruptions. Drivers of semi-trucks, RVs, and other tall vehicles should use extreme caution, especially along Highway 93, I-70 near Golden, and U.S. 36 between Boulder and Denver.
